Users Coming Off Slimming Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying such drugs should be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the medication report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
